On July 31, 2021, Dillion Jones, a 20-year-old from San Bernardino, placed an order with the victim for one pound of marijuana. Jones along with his cousins Martrell Patrick Shaw, a 20-year-old from San Bernardino, and Rontrell Shaw, a 22-year-old from San Bernardino, planned to rob the victim at gunpoint, said a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Once the victim arrived at the established drug deal location in San Bernardino, Martrell Shaw and Jones robbed him at gunpoint and one of the robbers shot twice, striking the victim in the neck and torso, prosecutors said.

Martrell Shaw and Jones then stole the marijuana and gun belonging to the victim, who later died from the gunshot wounds he suffered, the news release said.

Rontrell Shaw then picked up Martrell Shaw and Jones and drove away, officials said.

Federal prosecutors identified the victim as “D.M.”

San Bernardino Police in August 2021 said Daniel Michel, 21, of Colorado Springs, Colo., was found fatally shot July 31, 2021, in the 1300 block of West Hill Drive in a residential neighborhood.

On Monday, U.S. District Judge Jesus Bernal sentenced Martrell Shaw to 20 years in prison and Rontrell Shaw to 14 years in prison. Both had pleaded guilty to interference with commerce by robbery with Martrell also pleading guilty to discharging a firearm during a crime of violence resulting in death.

Jones pleaded guilty in September 2023 to one count of robbery conspiracy, one count of interference with commerce by robbery, one count of discharging a firearm during a crime of violence resulting in death and one count of possession of a stolen firearm. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 1.
