Body: A study published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery found that a cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) paste reduced osteoarthritis pain in cats.
Researchers from Utrecht University and ElleVet Sciences conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial involving 26 cats with diagnosed osteoarthritis. Fourteen cats completed the study, while 12 dropped out—primarily because they refused to consume the paste.
The results showed that cats treated with the CBD/CBDA paste experienced significantly reduced pain and improved mobility compared to placebo. Improvements were evident as early as two weeks and continued throughout the six-week treatment period, as measured by both veterinarian examinations and owner-reported pain scores. Importantly, bloodwork revealed no significant differences between the CBD/CBDA and placebo groups, suggesting the treatment was generally safe.
However, the high dropout rate underscores the need for alternative formulations that are easier for cats to tolerate. Researchers noted that many cats disliked the taste or texture of the paste, complicating dosing consistency.
The authors concluded that CBD/CBDA paste appears effective in alleviating osteoarthritis pain in cats, but larger studies with better delivery methods are needed to confirm the findings and establish long-term safety.
