Rising Trend
Over 40% of fatal crash victims in the past six years had elevated THC levels in their blood, a new study reveals. Autopsies confirmed the presence of THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis.
Study Findings
A Wright State University study, published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, analyzed 246 deceased Ohio drivers.
42% tested positive for THC.
Average blood THC level: 30.7 ng/mL.
Levels consistently exceeded legal limits over six years, despite Ohio's recent recreational cannabis legalization.
Legal Limits
Ohio and Nevada: 2 ng/mL.
Colorado, Washington, Nevada: 5 ng/mL.
Many states enforce zero-tolerance laws or require proof of impairment for DUI charges.

Expert Insights
Lead researcher Akpofure P. Ekeh, professor at Wright State University, was shocked by the high THC levels.
"An average of 30.7 ng/mL suggests recent cannabis use before driving, not just residual effects."
Dr. Laura Markley, addiction specialist at Akron Children’s, highlighted the dangers:
"THC slows reaction time, clouds judgment, and impairs coordination. Those seconds of delay can be deadly."
Hidden Risks
Even below legal limits, THC impairs driving. Modern cannabis products, with higher potency, may worsen and prolong impairment.Markley noted that high tolerance doesn’t eliminate risks: slower reflexes, unreliable judgment, and reduced focus persist.
Public Health Concern
Ekeh stressed the need for awareness.
"Treat cannabis like alcohol: Don’t smoke and drive."
