Florida authorities are arresting workers from the Smart & Safe Florida campaign, backed primarily by Trulieve Cannabis Corp., over alleged fraud in collecting signatures for a 2026 adult-use marijuana legalization ballot measure. Attorney General James Uthmeier announced 46 investigations and subpoenas on January 20, targeting 50 circulators accused of forging signatures, including those of deceased individuals. At least nine arrests occurred, with more warrants anticipated, as statewide prosecutor Brad McVay seeks campaign records for potential election law violations. The campaign, requiring over 880,000 valid signatures by February 1, denies misconduct, insisting it complies with laws and self-reports issues. A judge invalidated 29,000 out-of-state signatures (under appeal), and lawsuits continue. Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration opposes legalization, facing claims of misusing $10 million in Medicaid funds to fight it. Recent polling shows support at 51%, the lowest in years. Florida’s medical cannabis market remains the nation’s largest, seen as a key growth target if adult-use qualifies. The arrests heighten scrutiny as the campaign pushes forward amid state resistance and legal challenges.
