Meta’s Updated Cannabis Policy: Navigating Challenges for Content Creators

Meta’s latest policy allows brands to educate, advocate, or share PSAs about cannabis, provided no illicit substances are promoted. However, content creators still face suppression, including shadow-banning and account deletions, which have worsened for many.

Shadow-banning buries posts, making pages hard to find unless users search the exact username, reducing engagement. Deletions can be sudden, but there are ways to lower risks and recover accounts.

Avoiding Trouble with Meta

Prevention is key to protecting your cannabis-related account. Ensure content complies with Meta’s rules to avoid flags. Ishqa Hillman, CEO of The Canna Boss Babes, keeps content mild, creates backup accounts, buys a blue checkmark, and avoids smoking on Lives for better success.

Betsy Kabaker, communications manager at Puffco, emphasizes backup accounts: “Have a backup account with a similar username so it appears in searches,” she told GreenState.

Ben Mason, CEO of Pillar Marketing, notes that Meta scans highlights, reshares, bio links, and associated pages for violations. Creators must keep their entire “ecosystem” clean to avoid flags. External reports from users can also trigger suspensions, as Bill Levers of Beard Bros Pharms explains: “Instagram often suspends first, asks questions later.” While you can’t control reports, proactive steps reduce permanent ban risks.

Handling a Ban

If banned, don’t panic—options exist. Submitting help tickets or appealing in-app are standard, but Mason suggests a strategic approach: “Don’t appeal immediately; a manual reviewer’s decision is hard to reverse. Escalate through a Meta account rep first, review for violations, then appeal.” He claims an over 80% reinstatement rate for first-time suspensions.

Meta account reps are available only for business accounts with sufficient ad spend. Otherwise, reaching support is tough. One Reddit user had a family member with Meta Verified contact support to reinstate their account. Mason advises leveraging ad spend: “Meta values compliant advertisers.”

Switching to a creator account, then back to a business account, may reset shadow-bans, per Levers. Connecting Instagram and Facebook to Meta Business Suite ensures access to support channels. Kabaker stresses verifying identity and business: “Submit an appeal with documents proving who you are.”

Inconsistent Censorship

Meta’s enforcement lacks consistency. Pages with similar content face different outcomes. Marc Emmelmann, Vice President of Brothers Grimm Seeds, voiced concerns on LinkedIn about “inconsistent enforcement and algorithmic errors.” His page was removed twice—once reinstated after proving compliance, only to be banned again for “account integrity” issues.

Alternatives to Meta

Meta remains unmatched for reaching large, intergenerational audiences, but some creators explore alternatives. Platforms like X, Snapchat, Reddit, and LinkedIn have looser cannabis policies. Cannabis-specific platforms like Leafwire and CanMar allow creators to showcase products and connect with communities. Kerri Accardi’s 420MEDIA is launching a streaming TV channel for brands on platforms like Apple TV and Spotify.

Many creators also build websites or focus on in-person outreach, though these require resources not all have. Social media’s dominance makes it hard to avoid entirely.

Moving Forward

Meta’s policies keep cannabis creators on edge, and while divesting is challenging, proactive measures like backup accounts, compliance, and strategic appeals improve survival odds. These steps don’t guarantee safety but enhance your chances of maintaining a lasting social media presence.
