A report by the Missouri Cannabis Trade Association reveals that 96% of 55 tested products from smoke shops, gas stations, and retailers across Missouri, including Columbia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Independence, and Springfield, were actually marijuana or synthetic THC, with 53 exceeding the federal 0.3% hemp THC threshold—ranging from 11 to 5,000 milligrams per package, and one Independence vape at 89.3% THC. Over 400 unregulated stores sell these intoxicating items outside licensed cannabis programs, despite 2022 voter-approved recreational marijuana legalization. The 16-page Missouri Hemp Hoax Report highlights public health risks, especially for children, with no testing, child-safe packaging, or minor sales restrictions required. Contaminants like pesticides and heavy metals were found in 29% of samples. Executive Director Andrew Mullins notes a 400% rise in poison control calls and enforcement gaps, as local police often see these as legal post-legalization. The association pushes for regulations, but bills stalled due to opposition. Spokesperson Jack Cardetti stresses unregulated products' dangers. Defense attorney Dan Viets counters that federal law deems hemp-derived products legal regardless of THC levels, arguing the report ignores this and that hemp industry seeks regulations while licensed cannabis competitors aim to eliminate rivalry, potentially closing stores.
