On December 16, 2025, the New Jersey Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee approved Assembly Bill 4182 by a 9-4 vote, advancing it to the full Senate. Sponsored by Democratic State Representatives Wayne DeAngelo, Reginald Atkins, and Annette Quijano, the bill aims to establish clearer employment conditions for marijuana industry workers. It previously passed the full Assembly on June 30 by a 61-19 vote, following approvals from the Assembly Oversight and Labor Committees. Introduced in April 2024, the legislation has progressed steadily through the legislative process. Supporters argue that the bill strengthens workplace protections in New Jersey's marijuana sector, which has created thousands of jobs since legalization but faces scrutiny over labor standards and worker rights. Clearer rules are expected to enhance job stability and industry accountability as the regulated market expands. If enacted, the bill would integrate cannabis workers more fully into the state's labor framework, expanding protections and ensuring broader application of employment laws. This development reflects ongoing efforts to address gaps in cannabis legalization, prioritizing fair treatment for employees in a burgeoning industry. Labor unions and advocates have pushed for such measures to prevent exploitation. Opponents may cite potential burdens on businesses, but the bipartisan support indicates consensus on worker safeguards. The full Senate's vote could pave the way for final passage, potentially influencing other states' approaches to cannabis labor policies. Overall, it marks a step toward equitable growth in New Jersey's marijuana economy.
