Oklahoma’s campaign to legalize recreational marijuana is gaining momentum, with petitions now available for signing at nearly 200 locations in more than 80 cities.
The broad distribution highlights the scope of the effort, which is leaning on both dispensaries and non-cannabis businesses to bring the initiative directly to residents statewide. The measure, State Question 837, would allow individuals 21 and older to legally possess and purchase marijuana, along with cultivating up to 12 plants for personal use. The proposal would establish a system of licensed and regulated cannabis stores, with a 10% excise tax placed on recreational sales.
Organizers have until early November to collect roughly 173,000 valid signatures to qualify for the November 2026 ballot. To accomplish this, the campaign has built an expansive network of petition locations that reach from major urban hubs to small rural towns, ensuring residents across the state have opportunities to participate. Volunteers and business owners have been key in expanding access, with many offering prominent spots for petition tables and encouraging customers to sign.
Supporters say the wide geographic spread of signing locations is critical for success, especially given Oklahoma’s size and the legal requirement for all signatures to be collected in person. By placing petitions in nearly every corner of the state, the campaign hopes to build a groundswell of support that reflects the state’s diverse population. Proponents of the initiative say that the nearly 200 locations currently housing the petition is just a start, with the number expected to grow substantially in the coming weeks.
The initiative comes at a time when Oklahoma’s medical marijuana program remains one of the largest in the country, and public opinion continues to shift toward broader legalization. If State Question 837 qualifies and is approved by voters, Oklahoma would become the 25th state to legalize recreational cannabis.
