Pittsburg police discovered a dangerous and illegal marijuana grow operation while responding to an early Thursday home invasion.

The operation may have ties to Chinese organized crime, police said.

The incident started at 6 a.m. when officers responded to a home invasion call on Redondo Drive. Police said three men broke into a home and held a man at gunpoint.

The suspects stole cash, weapons and the man's car, police said. When officers arrived they discovered an illegal indoor marijuana grow.

Pittsburg code enforcement has red-tagged the house because of safety issues resulting from the marijuana grow.

Police are investigating whether the operation is tied to Chinese organized crime, which state officials said is often the case when indoor marijuana grows are found in the East Bay.

It was unclear Thursday if any arrests were made by police.
