A randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover clinical trial published in Nutrients found that a single 300 mg dose of cannabidiol (CBD) may reduce anxiety and perceived effort during exercise in recreational runners. The study involved 12 participants (average age 25.5) who ingested CBD or placebo capsules, rested for two hours, then completed a 2-mile treadmill run at maximum effort. Assessments measured state anxiety, relaxation, perceived exertion, heart rate variability, blood pressure, lactate levels, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Compared to placebo, CBD increased feelings of calm by 21% and relaxation by 22%. Perceived exertion decreased by 8% at the one-mile mark, yet overall run performance and times remained unchanged. No significant differences appeared in physiological markers or side effects. These outcomes suggest acute CBD use before short-duration exercise could help alleviate pre-run anxiety and make efforts feel less strenuous for athletes, without compromising performance or causing adverse reactions. The results highlight CBD's potential as a supportive aid for recreational runners.
