$5 million in illegal cannabis products seized in Bronx drug bust; 11 arrested

THE BRONX, New York (WABC) -- Nearly a dozen people were arrested in a massive marijuana bust in the Bronx on Thursday, according to officials.

New York City Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kaz Daughtry said officials recovered more than $5 million worth of illegal cannabis products from a home located at 522 Timpson Pl.

He says an illegal cannabis business was operating out of the home.

"Unlicensed cannabis operations like this pose a significant health risk," Daughtry said. "They could be potentially selling unregulated and untested product that can make people sick and also cause overdoses."

The joint investigation led by the New York City Sheriff led to the arrests of11 people, ranging in ages from 22 to 65 years old, and the seizure of about 2,000 pounds of cannabis products, $20,000 in cash and an illegal firearm.

Collectively, officials say the suspects have 21 prior arrests. One of the individuals had nine prior charges, including a conviction for murder.

In video obtained by Eyewitness News, you can see how the inside of the home had been converted into a marijuana marketplace.

Neighbors said it was a popular one too.

"This thing looks like 42nd Street. It's like Grand Central Station," said neighbor Gregory Ayala.

As for the home, officials say it's the second time authorities have investigated this location.

On July 21, 2024, the home was the secondary location of a bust where officials seized $2 million in illegal cannabis products.

"The location was closed for some time, they came back," said New York City Sheriff Anthony Miranda. "So, the location somebody gives them access, and this is an ongoing investigation into the ownership and who allowed them to be here."

Investigators believe the business has been bouncing around over the past year, developing an e-commerce operation and eventually returning to the garage on Timpson Place, where on Thursday, inspectors condemned the building.

"If they open back up again and they're doing illegal stuff again then we're going to keep shutting them down," Daughtry said. "That's what we have to do, we have to keep shutting them down."
