Advocates for the Act to Restore a Sensible Marijuana Policy ballot initiative claim they are on track to collect enough signatures by December 3 to qualify for the November 2026 ballot, aiming for 100,000 signatures to repeal adult-use cannabis sales in Massachusetts while allowing home cultivation, gifting, and medical sales.
The measure, sponsored by Caroline Cunningham and others including a psychiatrist and a pastor, targets concerns over cannabis effects on youth and the persistence of the illicit market.
Despite 53% voter approval of adult-use legalization in 2016 and a 2024 poll showing 65% support, the campaign faces challenges in overturning the $1.6 billion industry.
The initiative echoes broader Republican opposition to marijuana legalization, including efforts to influence federal rescheduling under President Trump and a lawsuit in Florida alleging election tampering to defeat legalization.
