Emergency department visits in Virginia linked to cannabis-related issues, particularly cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS), have risen significantly in recent years. Data from the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association shows a nearly 29% increase in adult ER visits for CHS, cannabis abuse, dependence, and poisoning diagnoses between 2020 and 2024.

Specifically, CHS-related visits grew from 4,027 in 2020 to 5,175 in 2024, totaling 24,960 cases over the five-year period. Broader cannabis-related visits exceeded 172,778, averaging over 31,000 annually and peaking at 37,690 in 2022.

CHS is a condition that affects some long-term cannabis users, causing repeated cycles of severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The surge highlights growing concerns about health impacts as cannabis use becomes more widespread following changes in legal status. Health officials note that while cannabis offers benefits for some, heavy or prolonged use can lead to adverse effects requiring medical intervention.

These statistics underscore the importance of public education on responsible use and recognition of symptoms. Hospitals continue to monitor trends to better address cannabis-related health emergencies in the state.
