Governor Jared Polis Announces Pardons for Psilocybin Possession Convictions at Psychedelic Science 2025 Conference

june 20 2025

On Wednesday, Colorado Governor Jared Polis announced pardons for individuals convicted of possessing psilocybin and psilocin, the active compounds in psychedelic mushrooms, during his address at the Psychedelic Science 2025 conference held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. The conference, which runs throughout the week, convenes experts and advocates to discuss advancements in psychedelic research and policy.

The executive action grants clemency to Coloradans with prior convictions for possession of these substances, effectively clearing their records. “This decision not only restores opportunities for affected individuals but also rectifies past public policy missteps, fostering a more equitable justice system,” Governor Polis stated.

In his remarks, Polis highlighted Colorado’s progress toward the regulated use of psychedelic mushrooms, following the 2022 voter-approved measure to decriminalize psilocybin and psilocin for adults 21 and older. The initiative also authorized state-regulated “healing centers” to provide supervised psilocybin experiences, positioning Colorado as a pioneer in psychedelic reform.

Governor Polis emphasized Colorado’s ambition to lead the nation in developing a robust legal framework and advancing research on psychedelic substances. “As we have done with cannabis, Colorado is at the forefront of reforming outdated laws to embrace the potential of natural medicines,” he said in a prepared statement.

The pardons and ongoing policy efforts underscore Colorado’s commitment to shaping the future of the psychedelics industry while promoting justice and innovation.
