Kansas City considers zoning ordinance to allow some marijuana dispensaries to operate 24 hours

Kansas City is exploring a zoning change to let certain comprehensive and medical marijuana dispensaries run 24 hours daily. Eligible sites must sit at least 1,000 feet from residential zones; others stay limited to 8 a.m.–10 p.m. The proposal caps 24-hour special use permits at five years, requiring fresh applications and public hearings for renewals. All dispensaries must hold state licenses from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and follow spacing rules: 1,000 feet from schools, 300 feet from churches/daycares, and 2,000 feet from other dispensaries. Operations and storage require fully enclosed buildings to prevent noise, vibration, or external impacts. The ordinance heads to the Neighborhood Planning and Development Committee on February 24, 2026, for review. This could expand access in commercial areas while maintaining community safeguards amid Missouri's legal cannabis market. Proponents see potential for convenience and economic benefits; critics may raise concerns over late-night activity. The change reflects evolving local policies balancing business flexibility with public safety in a growing industry.
