The Mississippi House passed two bills to enhance the state's medical cannabis program by easing access and reducing burdens. House Bill 895, sponsored by Rep. Lee Yancey (R), extends physician certifications and patient ID cards from one to 24 months for those with chronic or permanent conditions, eliminating mandatory annual follow-ups while keeping initial oversight. Proponents say it cuts costs, paperwork, and travel challenges for long-term patients. House Bill 1034, introduced by Rep. Kevin Felsher (R), allows terminally ill patients to use medical cannabis during hospital stays—addressing a current gap where no clear provisions exist, potentially leaving patients without access in extended care. Use would follow hospital policies and regulations. Both measures aim to improve patient experiences without major program overhauls. If enacted, they would amend existing rules following Senate review and possible gubernatorial approval. The bills reflect ongoing efforts to refine Mississippi’s medical marijuana framework for better efficiency and compassion, particularly for chronic and end-of-life cases.
