A recent poll conducted by NuggMD in collaboration with Marijuana Moment indicates that merely six percent of marijuana consumers approve of the Trump administration’s actions on cannabis policy, with 1.6 percent strongly approving and 4.5 percent approving. In contrast, 38.4 percent remain neutral, 26.1 percent disapprove, and 29.5 percent strongly disapprove, resulting in a net approval rating of -49.6 percent. This figure represents a drop from the 11 percent approval recorded in the prior quarter. The survey polled 448 frequent cannabis consumers residing in states with legal markets, carrying a margin of error of ±4.63 percentage points, and was completed before emerging reports of Trump’s potential plans to reschedule cannabis. Notably, 51 percent of respondents indicated they would bolster their support for the administration should it proceed with rescheduling cannabis to Schedule III or fully legalize it, including 38.4 percent who would be much more supportive and 12.5 percent a bit more. Meanwhile, 47.5 percent stated their opinion would remain unchanged, and only 1.5 percent would support it less, yielding a net positive shift of 49.3 percent. Andrew Graham from NuggMD stressed the necessity for concrete rescheduling actions to reap political gains from cannabis consumers, as it would enhance access without fully addressing federal conflicts. Rumors persist that Trump may soon announce rescheduling, which he is reportedly considering “very strongly” to enable expanded research. Critics, such as Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), contend that this move is inadequate and politically motivated to improve approval ratings, while drug testing organizations caution about implications for workforce safety. Bipartisan lawmakers exhibit varied responses, and Trump has engaged with industry executives and officials, though House Speaker Johnson opposes the change. No definitive decisions have been confirmed, but rescheduling would acknowledge marijuana’s medical benefits and reduced abuse potential relative to other Schedule I substances.
