State Senator Joe Gruters of Florida has been officially chosen to lead the Republican National Committee, becoming the first RNC chair in history to openly support legalizing cannabis.

Gruters, who previously served as RNC treasurer, was formally elevated to the top role during the committee’s summer meeting in Atlanta.

His selection came without opposition, following the resignation of Chair Michael Whatley. President Donald Trump endorsed Gruters in July, saying he would “do an incredible job leading the Republican National Committee to big victories in November.”

The move comes just days after Trump said on August 11 that a decision on marijuana rescheduling will come in “the next few weeks.”

A longtime Trump ally, Gruters has distinguished himself as one of Florida’s most pro-marijuana Republican lawmakers.

He backed Amendment 3, the 2024 initiative that legalized recreational marijuana for adults, calling it “a common-sense decision that prioritizes individual freedom, health, safety and economic growth.”

Gruters has also sponsored legislation to protect the jobs of state employees who use marijuana legally and has repeatedly filed bills to allow medical marijuana patients to cultivate up to two plants at home. He has framed home cultivation as a basic patient right.

With his formal selection, Gruters steps into the national spotlight not only as a key Trump ally but also as a party leader whose record on marijuana policy sets him apart from his predecessors.
