South Carolina House lawmakers will debate two hemp proposals this week: an outright ban on hemp-derived THC products or new regulations. Hemp produces psychoactive THC items sold widely. Last year, the House raised the purchase age to 21. Industry advocate David Spang, founder of Coastal Green Wellness, backs regulation, warning a ban would harm businesses and consumers who have benefited for eight years: “It has been beneficial for a lot of South Carolinians... to small businesses that have made their livelihood.” Rep. Justin Bamberg (D) supports adult choice, saying veterans or workers should access CBD or THC products freely. The regulatory proposal restricts hemp-infused drinks to liquor stores, limits them to 12 ounces and 5mg delta-9 THC max. House Judiciary Chairman Rep. Weston Newton (R) calls the market a “wild, wild West,” favoring rules to protect minors: “If we do a complete ban... a 12-year-old can still have complete access.” Regulation appears to have stronger support; Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey anticipates Senate action later, possibly aligning with the House version or proposing alternatives.
