A University at Buffalo study in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs surveyed 438 past-year cannabis users (56% also drank alcohol) and found cannabis-infused beverages linked to major alcohol reduction. Among those adopting cannabis drinks (typically one per occasion, often ≤10mg THC), weekly alcohol intake dropped from 7.02 to 3.35 drinks—a 52% decrease—with fewer binge episodes. Overall, 62.6% reduced or quit alcohol (61.5% reduced, 1.1% quit), while only 3.3% increased. Cannabis beverages showed higher substitution rates (58.6%) than other forms like flower or edibles (47.2%). Most bought from licensed dispensaries, with social appeal (beer/seltzer-like packaging) aiding use in party/bar settings. Researchers highlight alcohol's links to cancers and diseases versus cannabis's lower risks, suggesting substitution benefits. Limitations include self-reported data and potential bias. The findings indicate cannabis drinks may facilitate alcohol reduction in familiar social contexts.
