A new Washington state bill has been introduced that could make it legal for short-term rental operators — similar to those on Airbnb and other hospitality platforms — to provide complimentary marijuana prerolls to adult guests. House Bill 2639, filed on January 23 and set for a January 30 public hearing, proposes a first-of-its-kind permitting framework allowing short-term rental owners to offer one preroll containing up to one gram of cannabis per adult guest, provided proper age verification occurs at check-in. Operators would pay a modest $75 annual permit fee. Importantly, the legislation would not alter existing public consumption laws; guests could only consume the cannabis on private rental property, not in public. The bill aims to place marijuana alongside other typical rental amenities like Wi-Fi or bottled water and could expand cannabis tourism while maintaining legal safeguards. If passed, Washington would become the first state to explicitly allow a hospitality-integrated cannabis perk, blending recreational weed use with tourism and property rental services while retaining strict compliance with age and public consumption restrictions. The proposal reflects growing interest in innovative cannabis policy models across legal states.
