ProPublica and The Denver Gazette tested 14 marijuana vapes from Denver-area dispensaries for signs of illegal hemp-derived THC substitution. Hemp conversion to THC often produces detectable delta-8/delta-10 THC or solvent residues banned in Colorado marijuana production. Three samples showed significant anomalies: Dutch Botanicals vapes had delta-8 THC (1.1–3.3%); the company faces license suspension over related allegations but denies hemp use. Rockin Extracts showed delta-10 THC and unlisted solvents, attributed by the company to degradation or supplier oil. C2CC's product contained toluene, a hazardous solvent indicative of conversion. Experts called levels over 1% highly suspicious, though some noted possible natural degradation. Findings highlight regulatory gaps, as Colorado lacks robust random off-the-shelf testing despite industry complaints about unfair competition and consumer risks from hemp-derived intoxicants. The state's pilot testing program faces delays due to funding shortages. Results suggest need for stronger enforcement and clearer hemp-marijuana distinctions to protect the regulated market.
