The White House reaffirmed strong backing for President Trump's executive order rescheduling marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III, despite opposition from former drug czar Bill Bennett. Trump's December 2025 order directs expedited reclassification to recognize medical use and boost research, without nationwide legalization. Attorney General Pam Bondi noted a final order nears, though unpublished as of mid-February. Trump highlighted eased medical research for benefits, risks, and treatments, especially aiding veterans. Spokesman Kush Desai emphasized promising treatments for patients. Bennett criticized on Fox News, calling marijuana a gateway drug harming youth focus, academics, and normalizing use, despite admiring Trump. The administration positions reform as research-driven for veterans and patients, with support from law enforcement and veteran groups at signing. Pushback from conservatives persists, but the White House remains committed to advancing the change amid ongoing debates on cannabis policy.
