A Florida bill tightening regulations on low-THC medical marijuana products and dispensary locations is advancing. Senate Bill 902, scheduled for a vote in the Appropriations Committee on February 18, previously passed the Health Policy Committee unanimously.
The legislation redefines "low-THC cannabis" based on dispensed products, requiring no more than 0.8% THC and at least 2% cannabidiol by weight, excluding edibles. Physicians and medical directors would need biennial certification through a two-hour course from approved medical associations.
The bill expands buffer zones, prohibiting new cultivation, processing, or dispensing facilities within 500 feet of schools, parks, child care centers, and early learning facilities after July 1, 2026. Existing approved sites are grandfathered, and local governments retain authority to waive restrictions after public review.
These changes aim to refine oversight of Florida's medical marijuana program while balancing access and community concerns.
