Julius Randle's Journey: From Knicks Star to Mental Clarity
Julius Randle spent four seasons with the New York Knicks, a place where he completely transformed his career. He became a three-time All-Star and a two-time All-NBA player during his time in New York.
Former Knicks Forward Julius Randle Opens Up About Quitting Cannabis
Despite his success, there were significant challenges along the way. Randle recently revealed that after being traded from the Knicks to the Minnesota Timberwolves last summer, he quit using cannabis to improve his mental health.
"It’s important to have a clear mind… without anything influencing you… substance… whatever… Cannabis made me distant and not present… I’d kinda be in my own world," Randle shared on an AmenClinics podcast.
Randle was known for his fiery energy and tenacity on the court. However, at times, his emotions would get the better of him, leading to bouts of frustration with officials and even coaches.
These emotional outbursts sometimes negatively impacted his performance, causing many Knicks fans to turn against him. His well-documented struggles in the postseason further fueled fan dissatisfaction, most notably shown in a video of fans tearing down his poster on the Madison Square Garden walls.
A Strong Start with the Timberwolves
Randle had an impressive first season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, averaging 18.7 points and 7.1 rebounds as Anthony Edwards’ second option. He also delivered a strong postseason performance, playing a key role in the Timberwolves’ run to the Western Conference Finals. It was evident that his mental state was far healthier than during the high-pressure atmosphere in New York.
The Knicks’ Side of the Trade
The Knicks benefited greatly from the trade, acquiring Karl-Anthony Towns, who became an All-Star starter in his first season with the team. Like Randle, Towns was instrumental to the Knicks’ success, and they are poised to seize a big opportunity in the upcoming season.
Randle’s Lasting Impact
Randle was the catalyst for the Knicks’ turnaround when he blossomed into an All-Star in 2021. Though he didn’t finish the journey with New York, his impact on the city remains significant. It’s heartening to see his mental health in a much better place today.
