A Detroit Juvenile Detention Center employee has been charged with supplying four 17-year-old males housed there with cannabis gummies, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced.
Joseph Robinson, 22, of Detroit, was charged with four counts of furnishing a controlled substance (cannabis) to minors, an eight-year felony, and four counts of jails-furnishing contraband to prisoners, a five-year felony.
Robinson was working as a mentor at the detention center on July 2 at 6:30 p.m. when he allegedly gave the contraband to the youths, officials said. Employees observed the four to be lethargic, incoherent, and in impaired mental states and immediately had them transported to a local hospital.
They were discharged from the hospital on the same day, and an investigation by detention center officials resulted in the arrest of Robinson on Thursday, officials said.
“There is simply no excuse for the defendant’s alleged behavior. It is especially reprehensible because the defendant was supposed to be a mentor to the young men housed at the JDF and not a catalyst for criminal conduct. The result of his actions was the exact opposite of what this volunteer program was designed to be about,” said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a statement.
