Long Island pot shops sell most expensive cannabis in NY — and outsell every other region

OG article by Brandon Cruz November 25, 2025

Licensed dispensaries in Nassau and Suffolk counties charged an average of $41 for 3.5 grams of cannabis in 2024, the highest per-unit price in New York state, according to data from the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM). Despite having only about six stores across both counties—representing just 3% of the state's dispensaries—Long Island generated 11% of statewide retail sales, surpassing revenue from the five boroughs, Hudson Valley, and all upstate regions combined. Each Long Island storefront averaged $20 million in sales, the highest in New York, contributing nearly $4 million in tax revenue to Suffolk County alone last year. Statewide, cannabis prices have dropped 17% since legal sales began in late 2022, yet Long Island remains pricier than the next most expensive areas like Mohawk Valley and New York City. Consumers like David Duran expressed frustration, saying, “The legal prices are absolutely deterring me from buying from these stores,” leading some to grow their own or turn to street dealers for cheaper options, such as $130-$160 for 28 grams of California cannabis versus $200 or more at licensed spots. While some prefer legal markets for tested, pesticide-free products, an anonymous buyer noted opting for "shake" from illicit sources. Regulators expect prices to fall further with more stores opening but warn that rapid hikes could harm growers and retailers. This disparity highlights regional market dynamics in New York's evolving cannabis landscape, where limited supply drives high demand and premiums.
