Opponents of a 2026 ballot initiative to repeal Massachusetts' adult-use recreational marijuana law have filed objections alleging fraud in signature collection. Submitted January 2 to Secretary of State William Galvin, the challenge claims paid gatherers misled voters at sites like Trader Joe’s, Market Basket, Whole Foods, and Gillette Stadium lots. Alleged misrepresentations included claims the petition would remove fentanyl, fund housing, or support parks—unrelated to Initiative Petition 1E. Critics say gatherers showed only the petition's backside, omitting the law summary. The State Ballot Law Commission plans hearings soon. Attorney Thomas Kiley, representing challengers tied to cannabis retailers, stresses the need for evidence. Supporter Wendy Wakeman, ballot committee chair, defends the process as handled by trained professionals; the state certified over 78,000 signatures in December, surpassing requirements. Galvin notes proving fraud beyond assertions will be difficult. The dispute could impact whether the repeal reaches the ballot amid ongoing debates over the state's marijuana market.
