A growing number of vape cartridges sold at Michigan recreational marijuana dispensaries are being recalled.
Michigan's Cannabis Regulatory Agency said Sept. 2 that it's conducting a voluntary recall with House Brands Distro for its Runtz-branded Top Smoke Go Kartz 1-gram vape cartridges produced on Feb. 25. The agency said the vape carts contain a banned chemical and should not be consumed.
The recall of the Runtz vape carts follows a recall last week of nearly 5,800 Kushy Punch vape carts produced by Ann Arbor-based Exclusive Brands because the agency found the vapes contained medium chain triglyceride (MCT) oil.
It was one of several recalls of vape carts in recent months after the agency banned the use of MCT oil in vapes in October.
It's unclear which banned chemical is in the House Brands Distro vape carts. Michigan's CRA referred the question to the company, which didn't immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
Banned chemicals include Bifenthrin (an insecticide), Bifenazate (a pesticide) and Trifloxystrobin (a fungicide), among several others.
The CRA said House Brands Distro has identified sales locations that have this product in their inventory and are working with stores to retrieve and dispose of any recalled product in stock.
About 5,800 vape carts were sold and 3,800 vape carts are still at dispensaries around the state, a spokesperson for Michigan's CRA said.
The vape carts were sold at stores such as Herbology Cannabis Co. in River Rouge, several Jars Cannabis stores, Joyology of Lake Orion and Green Genie in Detroit, among others.
Consumers who purchased this flavor of House Brands Distro vape cartridge any time after Feb. 25 should check the Metrc Tag number of the package label and compare it to the recalled Metrc Tag numbers found on the CRA's website, the agency said.
Consumers with a recalled vape cart should dispose of it safely, the CRA said. Consumers who have experienced adverse reactions after using these products should report their symptoms and product use to their health care providers, the agency said.
Consumers are also encouraged to report any adverse reactions to the products to the CRA by completing an "Adverse Reaction Reporting Form" that can be found on the agency's website or by phone at 517-284-8599, the CRA said.
