State Crackdown

New York's Office of Cannabis Management seeks to shut down Lexachrom Analytical Laboratory. The Long Island lab faces a $2 million fine and a three-year ban after a four-month probe found pesticide-tainted products it cleared for sale.

Investigation Findings

State investigators visited Lexachrom twice and audited its records. They found:

  • Falsified test results

  • No procedures for accurate testing

  • Failure to share results with regulators

  • Poor record-keeping

Lexachrom surrendered its license in June, citing financial issues.

Industry Context

The fine is the largest ever sought by the four-year-old cannabis agency. It oversees 14 labs ensuring product safety. New York joins states like Michigan in targeting labs with faulty results. Michigan recently closed a lab for fraud.

Health Risks

“When labs fail safety standards, they risk New Yorkers’ health,” said Felicia A.B. Reid, acting executive director. Regulators recalled 12 batches of Lexachrom-tested cannabis flower due to unsafe pesticide levels.

Company Response

Lexachrom’s CEO, Alex Woodmass, claimed the lab addressed concerns in a June corrective plan. He declined further comment.

Broader Issues

Test result discrepancies are common due to varied testing methods and no scientific consensus on safety standards. Federal illegality forces states to set their own rules, leading to lab closures in 10 states.

Impact on Growers

Marcos Ribeiro of East End Flower Farm said one recalled batch failed due to trace pesticides. Others were sold or retested clean. He noted inconsistent results across labs, with some offering fast turnarounds to attract clients.

Ongoing Concerns

William Nichols of Biotrax Testing Laboratory called the state’s action too late. He said testing issues persist statewide with little enforcement.
