New medical marijuana law goes into effect in the new year

Oklahoma has implemented new medical marijuana regulations effective in 2026 and late 2025 to enhance safety and oversight. Under Senate Bill 1066, starting January 1, 2026, doctors must complete an initial education course and register with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority to prescribe marijuana; previously, an active license from relevant state boards sufficed, and non-compliant doctors will lead to rejected patient applications. Senate Bill 786, effective November 2025, addresses DUI loopholes by prohibiting marijuana consumption by any vehicle occupant, including passengers, labeling it as second-hand smoking; cannabis must remain in sealed original packaging and stored away, such as in the trunk. A medical marijuana card does not exempt drivers from DUI charges, with violations resulting in misdemeanor fines up to $500. Additional January 1, 2026, laws include Senate Bill 626, mandating companies notify the Attorney General within 60 days of data breaches affecting over 500 individuals, and provisions making false deed recordings a felony for unauthorized land claims. These changes aim to tighten access and reduce impaired driving since marijuana's 2018 legalization.
