A University of Michigan study found 22% of adults aged 19–30 use cannabis (18%) or alcohol (7%) to fall asleep. Experts warn these substances disrupt long-term sleep quality and increase dependency risk.
Research professor Megan Patrick said cannabis use for sleep is “alarming” despite short-term sedative effects. Advocates like dispensary owner Jerry Millen argue low-THC products help many replace alcohol or pills.
Good sleep hygiene—consistent bedtime, no screens, cool room—remains the recommended path.
