Washington Senate Committee to Vote Tomorrow on Bill Legalizing Cannabis Home Grows

Washington’s Senate Committee on Labor & Commerce is scheduled to vote February 3 at 10:30 a.m. on Senate Bill 6204, which would allow adults 21+ to grow cannabis at home. Washington legalized recreational cannabis in 2012 but remains one of only two states banning personal cultivation. Sponsored by Senators Rebecca Saldaña (D), Noel Frame (D), and T’wina Nobles (D), the bill permits up to six plants per person and 15 per household. Produced cannabis must remain private on the premises, invisible and not odorous from public view or neighbors. Minor violations (over six but under 16 plants) would be civil infractions; 16+ would be felonies with seizure and destruction of excess plants. A companion House Bill 1449 passed the House Consumer Protection & Business Committee in 2025. If advanced by the committee, the measure heads to the full Senate for further consideration. This could end Washington's long-standing prohibition on home grows, aligning it more closely with many other legal states while maintaining strict limits and privacy rules to address community concerns.
