California’s Department of Cannabis Control has proposed modifications to cannabis cultivation regulations and new statewide sanitation standards, following prior public input. The updates aim to streamline rules, clarify track-and-trace requirements, and mitigate contamination risks from unsanitary handling. Key elements include uniform sanitation standards for licensees in cultivation, processing, or handling of unpackaged cannabis, covering tool and equipment cleaning, container sanitation, handwashing or glove use, and animal restrictions in processing areas. The proposal redefines unsanitary conditions to include illegal pesticide possession, aligning with state pesticide law and preventing contaminated products from entering the supply chain, with provisions applying to related premises under the same ownership. Broader cultivation changes involve canopy definitions, harvest batch tracking and labeling, nursery and propagation rules, and adjustments to energy reporting and pest management plans. These revisions seek to enhance industry compliance, protect consumers, and promote sustainable practices. Public comments are accepted until January 14, 2026, after which the department will review feedback before final adoption, ensuring stakeholder input shapes the final regulations.
