Florida Senator Files Bill to Expand Medical Marijuana Supply Limits, Ease Renewal Requirements

State Senator Alexis Calatayud (R) has introduced Senate Bill 1032 to amend Florida's medical marijuana program. The bill permits qualified physicians to certify up to a 70-day supply of marijuana per order, doubling the existing 35-day limit. Physicians may request exceptions for higher daily dosage and possession limits for smokable forms, requiring electronic submission of patient medical condition details, dosage needs, and treatment benefits to the Department of Health. The department must approve or deny such requests within 14 days, with automatic approval if no response is received.

Patient evaluations would shift from annual in-person requirements to at least every 210 days, allowing telehealth options. Physicians must document adverse drug interactions and reduced use of controlled substances. Medical marijuana identification cards would extend from one to two years in validity. Additionally, all ID card fees would be waived for honorably discharged U.S. Armed Forces veterans.

The proposed changes aim to improve patient access, reduce administrative burdens, and support veterans. Supporters argue these updates will enhance the program's efficiency without compromising safety. If enacted, the changes would take effect on July 1, 2026, potentially benefiting thousands of qualified patients across the state by streamlining renewals and increasing supply flexibility.
